National security concerns grow over Don Beyer staffer's actions with Chinese Embassy

ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — Democratic Congressman Don Beyer (VA-8) fired his scheduler after he learned about “inappropriate” behavior in connection with the Chinese Embassy.
​
According to a source familiar with the situation, the House Sergeant at Arms was made aware that Beyer’s scheduler sought meetings with other congressional offices on behalf of individuals of the Chinese Embassy.
​
“I’ve worked as hard as I can the last eight years to be a change agent,” Beyer told 7News Reporter Nick Minock on Oct. 23 in Arlington. “I have the best team on Capitol Hill.”
​
Beyer’s comments to 7News happened two days before his office was notified by the U.S. House Sergeant at Arms that a member of his staff had recently engaged in “concerning behavior” in connection with the Chinese Embassy, according to a source familiar with the situation.
​
The source also told 7News that the House Sergeant at Arms (SAA) said they were contacted by two other congressional offices about Beyer's staffer seeking recent meetings with them on behalf of individuals at the Chinese Embassy for the purpose of “advocating on legislation and foreign policy initiatives.”
​
On Monday, 7News requested an interview with Beyer to ask him questions about this matter.
Beyer declined to answer questions on camera Monday.
